Kier has been selected as the preferred bidder by Cardiff Council for the construction of the new Ysgol Cynefin school in Wales, UK.
The £23m ($29.42m) development aims to expand the school’s capacity by relocating and rebuilding it across two sites in Cardiff.
These sites are located south of Fairwater Primary School on Wellwright Road and Pen Y Bryn Primary School on Dunster Road in Llanrumney.
Construction encompasses the erection of two new single-storey school buildings, one at each site.
The initiative will repurpose the land currently occupied by St Mellons Church in Wales Primary School, which will move to new accommodations at the St Edeyrns development.
This involves the demolition of existing structures at the St Mellons Church in Wales Primary School site in Llanrumney.

By GlobalDataA Cardiff Council spokesperson said: “Awarding the contract to build the new school sites is the next milestone in the delivery of this exciting and much-needed provision. By relocating and rebuilding Ysgol Cynefin over two sites, improvements can be made to the standard of facilities whilst providing more places for children in need of specialist provision.
“In addition, the colocation of the school with two mainstream primary schools will not only allow for sharing of good practice between schools but will also help to support opportunities for pupils to benefit from mainstream environments.”
The project is being implemented under the Band B Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, a joint effort by Cardiff Council and the Welsh Government.
The upgraded Ysgol Cynefin school will accommodate an increased number of students, rising from 42 to 72 places.
Starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, each school site will host 36 pupils.
Construction is expected to commence in late 2024.
Kier Western & Wales regional director Jason Taylor said: “We are thrilled to be named as preferred bidder for The Court, and to continue our relationship with Cardiff Council having delivered the flagship Fitzalan High School last year.”
