The latest figures from Homes England show a notable rise in the construction and completion of new homes between 1 April and 30 September 2024, excluding capital London.
The period saw the initiation of 15,682 new houses and the completion of 14,295 homes, marking progress over the same timeframe in 2023.
During this six-month span, there was a particular surge in the development of affordable housing. The starts on-site for such homes rose by 12%, aligning with the anticipated acceleration phase of the current five-year plan.
For affordable housing starts, there were 1,098 for rent, showing a 4% increase from last year.
Intermediate affordable housing schemes, including shared ownership and rent-to-buy, saw an increase of 22% with 1,426 homes started. Notably, social rent home starts surged by 148%, with 2,002 properties.

The completion figures also reflect a positive trend. From April to September 2024, there were 10,434 affordable home completions – a significant jump of 32% from the previous year’s figure of 7,929.
